Walking somewhat near the shallow end
walking on an ice-flow it's six AM
somewhere along the bank
parts drip off it's caving in
underneath it's 8 feet deep and sinking
keeping step 2 feet behind me
something's going to crack
and I'm too scared to look scared
it's not time to be heading back
you want to see the sunrise but it's at least 3 hours before it even comes
and the last stretch is always the hardest one
i try to be clever
i always try too hard
i try to say "you're more beautiful than any sunrise"
but the words just come out wrong
funny how the lighter clouds seem painted on
you say "hold my hand before it freezes off"
i thought you'd never ask
keeping step 2 feet behind me
something's going to crack
and I'm afraid it's going to be me
but I'm not ready yet
yet the things I want to say will probably never come
because the last stretch is always the hardest one
